Mercedes-Benz started selling the W124 model in 1984, a technological leader with numerous innovations that have since been adopted throughout the industry. In 1987 they added some sporting flavour with a coupe – badged as the CE they used both 4 and 6-cylinder engines.
The Tuning house AMG upped the game with various tuning items and body kits but the ultimate was the super rare AMG Hammer that saw the 300 6-cylinder swapped out for a Merc V8 bumped up to 6-litres.
South Africa had an independent arm of AMG Germany in Johannesburg, and it appears that this 300CE was converted to a 5-litre V8 and fitted with AMG gauges, steering wheel and body kit, Recaro seats and OZ 3-piece split rim alloys (rated for 300km/h and globally valuable today).
It is possibly the only conversion like this done by AMG SA and the closest thing to a Hammer you’ll find in the country.
