There are just some cars that draw attention without trying hard and maybe it is because of long cycle type fenders with the open wheels or the bright chrome work with the floating headlights. But, the answer is a class 50’s Small Sports Car that comes out of the Morris Garage Stable and far from a Noddy car.
MG (Morris Garage) was founded in 1920s and the First T-Types were produced in 1936. This model (T-Type) graced the MG floors until 1955 and MG reused the TF name in the modern mid-engine sports car in 2002. These 2-seater open-top sports cars were built in the principle of BODY-ON-FAME and the series over the years had TA, TB, TC, TD and finally the TF before the MGA was introduced and replaced them as a more modern car at the time. The TD was a very capable car and could do 0-60 MPH in 18 secs and a top speed of 77 MPH which doesn’t sound mind-blowing but it is really the fun factor of driving this car.
Our MG TD Midget, has that same fun factor in a classic sports car with the ability to turn heads of the young and older generations. And everyone has a story to tell about someone that knew that had one. Our little Grace has been fully restored and there hasn’t been a nut and bolt that wasn’t turned, cleaned or replaced. Since the restoration, she has only done 800 kms in total, so what we are basically saying is that she is almost factory new. The blue paintwork work with its large grill, bright chrome work and the tan leather interior is such a classic combo but suits the style of this T-Type to the bone and is a head turner.
The little 1250cc engine is spritely as it springs into life readily on the pull of the starter lever. Now that she is running and the sweet sound of the exhaust is burbling behind you, the driving can commence. It a simple but easy car to drive, the 4-speed gearbox is a little notchy and winey, but this is a period thing with MG’s. The drive is plush and very direct which adds to the fun factor of this piece of art on wheels. Well maybe you think the African sun is too much on our heads to be driving topless well believe it or not there is a matching tan soft-top to take those rays off your head and when the weather turns bad there are even side windows to keep you dry.
So, what is stopping you from owning the gem of a MG TD Midget, well come in and tell us about it and we will show you that it’s a real fun car.
Interesting trade-ins will be considered.
