All Landy fans know that the Holy Grail of Land Rovers is the Series I and it is the most valuable of them all, as well as that they don’t come up often for sale. But let’s just have a little history lesson and how we came to acquire this Series 1.
In the aftermath of World War II, the Rover Company conceived the Land Rover due to the fact that Rover Luxury cars weren’t in high demand and that there was a restricted number of raw materials to build cars they had to come up with a different plan. Another interesting fact is that the Rover factory in Coventry was bombed and that is how Land Rover came to be built in Solihull in a factory they had built before the war. The Chief designer Maurice Wilks came up with the plan to build a light agricultural and utility vehicle on similar line as the Willys Jeeps. Launched in 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show with its Steel Box-section chassis and all aluminum body, the Land Rover was born and today the company has a great history and following.
A few years later, we find ourselves at the birth of our Series 1 in 1955. At this stage Land Rovers where been built around the world in knock down kits, which means the history of any one for these Landies could be very different and we know that this gem started life in Germany and most likely as a patrol vehicle along the East German board. We don’t know how she made it to Africa but that she was a barn found in Mozambique living the life of a beach bum before she came to South Africa and was resorted to its former glory by Owen Walton.
Today the beautiful Series 1 is quite a catch with matching numbers, with a few upgrades like 11inch Drums on the front and defender mirrors. The 2.0l engine is a quick starter and keen to please, the fully rebuilt gearbox is tight but manageable to shift once you understand its workings. The Traditional green really suits the car and the whole build is something to behold with every nut and bolt turn to build the perfect piece of history.
In general, we know that this series isn’t for everyone but would be loved by the real Series Fans that would like all capable four-wheel drive vehicle to play round town or out on the trails.
So, are you a Landy Fan and is a Series on your list of collectibles? Then we have the car for you.
Come in and view her for yourself.
Interesting trade-in’s will be considered.
