Is this the next million Rand Mercedes Sports-car? Not yet, but almost certainly it will be over the coming years. First, there was the Gull-wing 300 and 190 SL’s, then there was the rush and massive price hike on the SL’s, known as the Pagodas of which we have parted with one or two, and if you can hunt one down now they are fetching between R1.6m and R2.4m. Now this Merc SL is tipped to be next in line for a hefty price rise. It is the beast of the bunch conceived in the 1970s, a 1977 SL, V8 450 fuel injected automatic, with soft and hard tops and seats like armchairs. The mohair-lined soft top is almost brand new and the hardtop has a new coat of paint ( actually several) and the hardtop has a fresh new headliner fitted. Before she arrived in our showroom she’s was overhauled by the Heritage Workshop, and is currently owned by a member of the Vintage and Veteran Car Club. He uses her for gentle weekend runs, and she goes like a dream.
